Russell F. Ungerer

Russell F. Ungerer, 84, of Fayette, died Saturday, February 25, 2017, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at Grace Lutheran Church in Fayette with Rev. Herbert Mueller, III officiating.  Interment will follow at the Hawkeye Cemetery in Hawkeye. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 28, at Becker-Milnes Funeral home in Fayette and for one hour preceding services at the church on Wednesday. 

Russell Frederick, son of Fred and Mildred (Schlessner) Ungerer was born July 9, 1932, at the family farm south of Hawkeye. He was baptized in August of 1932 and confirmed in March of 1947 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. He received his education in the Hawkeye Schools graduating from Hawkeye Public in 1950. Russell honorably served in the United States Army from August of 1953 before being honorably discharged in June of 1955. During his service he was stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia. On March 20, 1956, he was united in marriage with Marlene Wells at Bethel Presbyterian Church in West Union. Russell farmed for many years in the Hawkeye area before moving to Fayette in 1967. He worked for Fayette County until retiring in 1995. Russell was a long time member of Grace Lutheran Church in Fayette where he served on the church council and was also a member of the Fayette American Legion. He enjoyed reading, sports, especially the Chicago Cubs, Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears.

He is survived by his three daughters, Connie (John) Galloway of Cedar Falls, Shirley Ungerer of Fayette, and Nancy (Mark) Creery of Hawkeye; and four grandchildren, Tanner Creery of Des Moines, Zachary Creery of Hawkeye, Madison and Emily Creery, both of Iowa City.

In addition to his parents and wife, Marlene who died October 2, 2008, he was preceded in death by two sons, Randy and Gary Ungerer, and one brother, Roger Ungerer.

Prayers for the family. Russ and I always laughed about the time I ran into the road grader years ago. Scared the bajebbers out of both of us. He was coming up "Murphy's hill" and I was going down.
